Start the New Year Strong with These 5 Smile-Saving Resolutions

January 5, 2026

People celebrating the new year

You might want to start the new year right by taking better care of yourself. Many people have resolutions about exercising and the like, but don’t forget your smile! Making some small goals toward it can help keep your oral health at its best and avoid dental emergencies later on. Here are five simple habits you can start in 2026 to keep your grin the best it deserves to be.

1.)  Brush Your Teeth Properly

Brushing is an important step in your dental hygiene routine that you shouldn’t skip. By doing it twice every day with fluoride toothpaste, you can clean up to 60% of your teeth while also strengthening your enamel. Hold your toothbrush at a 45° angle toward your gumline, and you can set yourself up for success by doing it properly.

2.)  Keep Up with Flossing

It’s crucial that you stick to flossing as well! It cleans the remaining 40% that is leftover when you do the habit above. Not only that, but it also reaches areas your toothbrush can’t, like between your teeth and under your gumline. However, if you aren’t used to doing this step, then consider setting a reminder or putting a note on your mirror.

3.)  Stop Using Tobacco

If you’re a smoker or chew tobacco, then you might want to consider quitting to avoid oral health issues. These increase your risk of gum disease, which is an infection in the soft tissues of your mouth. At first, they may be inflamed, noticeably red, or bleed when you brush and floss, but they can turn into gum recession and tooth loss when left untreated.

4.)  Have a Balanced Diet

While eating a balanced diet may already be one of your resolutions, it can be great for your smile! By giving your body the nutrients it needs, you can boost your immune system to fight off inflammation and infection. Foods rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, C, and D are great options as they can also support your teeth and gums!

5.)  Visit Your Dentist Regularly

The four tips above are options you can stick to at home, but don’t forget to visit your dentist as well! They have advanced training and state-of-the-art technology to keep an eye out for a wide range of oral health issues. If they find any red flags, you can get the treatment you deserve before they worsen. That way, you can feel confident showing off a problem-free smile.
